The Singing Cat
Once upon a time there lived a king who had three sons. The first was named, Harry, the second was named, Hans, and the third was named, Michel. Now Harry and Hans were not so kind; they treated others very badly. But Michel was very kind. One day, the king decided that it was time for his sons to get married. So the king said to his sons, ‘’Now my sons, it is time for you to get married.’’ ‘’I will hold a contest.’’ ‘’All of the princesses from around the world shall be invited.’’ ‘’All three of you must go out into the wide world to find the most beautiful carpet in the world, the most beautiful clothing in the world, and last but not least, The Beautiful Song Cat.’’
‘’ The person who can bring me these shall pick the most beautiful princess for his wife.’’ ‘’I will pick a princess for the other brothers.’’ ‘’You each will get a month’s time to start the journey.’’ Now as Michel was going to his room, a white bird seemed to follow him. At last, the bird said to Michel, ‘’Take me to your room and put me in a jar of hot milk for an hour.’’ ‘’After one hour, take me out of the jar of hot milk and put me into a jar of cold milk.’’ ‘’After another hour has passed, put me in a jar of milk that is neither hot nor cold.’’ ‘’After another hour, put me in water.’’ ‘’When you take me out of the water, pluck all of my feathers out.’’ ‘’Then put me on the ground and hit me as hard as you can.’’
So Michel took the white bird to his room and did exactly as he was told. When Michel hit the bird, it fell down and changed into a beautiful princess. ‘’I am called, Mary,’’ said the princess. ‘’I will help you get the things that you need.’’ ‘’First of all, I will tell you how to find the most beautiful carpet in the world.” Mary gave Michel a bag of biscuits, a golden ring, and a red ball. Mary said, ‘’When you leave the kingdom behind, roll this ball in front of you.’’ ‘’Follow the ball, and when it stops, that means it is time for you to eat some biscuits.’’ ‘’At last, you will reach a little hut.’’ ‘’Go inside the hut and look under the third window.’’ ‘’That is where you shall find the most beautiful carpet in the world.’’ ‘’Wear this ring on your third finger.’’ ‘’I will appear then to tell you how to find the others.’’ So Michel bade fare well to Mary, and started on his journey.
At last, Michel reached the little hut. Inside, Michel looked under the third window. And there lay the most beautiful carpet in the world. On it were thousands of kingdoms including Michel’s kingdom. Even the sun and moon were on the carpet. The stars shone brightly on the carpet which made it glow. Millions of people were standing on the carpet. It was a wonder. Michel put the carpet safely in his pocket and put the golden ring on his third finger. Suddenly, Mary appeared before him. She said, ‘’Now Michel, it is time for you to find the most beautiful clothing in the world.’’
Mary gave Michel a bag of silver sticks, a silver ring, and a blue ball. She said, ‘’When you leave the kingdom, roll these silver sticks in front of you and follow them.’’ ‘’You will come to a big charming palace.’’ ‘’Go in and look under the fifth window.’’ ‘’There you will find the most beautiful clothing in the world.’’ ‘’Wear this silver ring on your fifth finger and roll this ball in front of you.’’ ‘’I will then appear again.’’ So Michel bade fare well to Mary and set off.
After a month of traveling Michel reached the big palace. He went in and looked under the fifth window. And there lay the most beautiful clothing in the world. Michel wrapped it up in his pocket, wore the silver ring, and threw the blue ball in front of him. Suddenly, Mary appeared before him. She said, ‘’Now Michel, you must find The Beautiful Song Cat.’’ This time, Mary did not give Michel anything. She said, ‘’Mount your horse and ride on until you come to an old tower.’’ ‘’Go inside and hide behind the stove.’’ ‘’Stay there for a while.’’ ‘’After some time, an old woman will show up.’’ ‘’Look behind the table next to you and take whatever food you find there.” “Have supper with the old woman using that food.” “The old woman will take out three wonderful things.” “One will be, The Amazing Dog, the second will be, The Singing Bird, and the last one will be, The Beautiful Song Cat.” “Take the cat and thank the old woman.” “Spend the night with her and ride back in the morning.” So in the morning, Michel bade fare well to Mary and set off. Whether the ride was short or long, one day Michel came to an old tower. He went inside and hid behind the stove.
When the old woman came, Michel looked under the table that was next to him. And there lay soft brown bread which was baked, golden cheese, and silver apples for dessert. Michel shared them with the old woman. After supper, the woman took out three things, The Amazing Dog, The Singing Bird, and The Beautiful Song Cat. Michel took the cat, thanked the woman, and spent the night with her.
In the morning, Michel bade fare well to the old woman and set off. At last, Michel reached the palace where Mary was waiting for him. When all three things were safely in Michel’s pocket, he went to the king. All his brothers were waiting for him. They had beautiful carpets, and beautiful clothing, but none of them had, The Beautiful Song Cat. When the king saw the carpet, he was quite amazed. But he was even more amazed when he saw the clothing. But when the king saw the cat he was so happy that he let Michel choose a princess. Mary was one of the princesses, so Michel chose her. So Michel and Mary lived happily ever after. THE END
