The Angry Mermaid
Once upon a time, there lived two brothers who were called, Cory and Willy. Cory, who was the older, had a nice house to live in, and good food to eat. Willy, who was the younger, did not have a house to live in. He lived in a poor cottage and hardly had enough to eat. But his kind brother Cory would give him all he needed. The two brothers loved each other very much. One day, Cory had to go to another city to study. Cory was going to study, take a test, and then go home. So Cory came to Willy’s cottage to say good-bye. The two brothers said fare-well, hugged each other, and then fell apart. Cory packed all his belongings, said fare-well to his other friends, and left for the city.
When he arrived, he built himself a charming house to live in. Cory stayed in the city for almost one year. When his studies were over, Cory sold his house, and left for his home town. On his way there, Cory came to a big ocean. Cory was very thirsty, so he bent down to take a drink. But just as Cory reached for the water, a beautiful mermaid appeared out of the splashing waves. She grabbed Cory’s arm tight and tried to pull him into the deep waters. Cory tried to stay on land, but the mermaid was too strong. At last, the mermaid had pulled Cory deep inside the ocean. Now the mermaid was called, Tina, and Tina was the princess of the kingdom which lay below the ocean.
Now Tina was very beautiful, and soon, Cory fell in love with her. So after a few days, Cory and Tina were married. Cory soon got used to living under the water. He loved Tina very much. Tina loved Cory too. They lived happily under the water. Meanwhile, Willy waited and waited for Cory. Five years passed by but still, Cory did not come back. After six years had passed by, Willy stopped waiting for Cory. One day, Willy decided to go out into the world to seek his fortune.
So Willy packed his bags, said good-bye to his friends, and set off to seek his fortune. Willy traveled far and he hoped to find some good place to work. One night, Willy stopped to rest at an inn. Willy ordered a glass of wine, some bread with cheese, and a good bed to sleep in. As Willy was eating supper, a group of young men joined him. Willy shared his food with the young men, and made friends with them. They talked and shared stories. When the time came for Willy and the young men to pay, Willy not only gave his fee, but also the young men’s fee. The men were so grateful, that they gave Willy a little ring.
They said, ‘’Put this ring in your pocket.’’ ‘’When your life is at a risk, put this ring on your finger.’’ ‘’With this ring, you can live as long as you want.’’ Then the young men went away. But the youngest one said, ‘’Just remember, if you wish to live for more than three hundred years, then for the rest of your life you will be unhappy.’’ Then the young man went away too.
That night, Willy slept at the inn. When the first rays of the sun came up, Willy gave his fee, and set off. One day, Willy came to a deep forest. Willy stopped to rest under a tree. Suddenly, a big lion sprang out of the bushes. Willy quickly took the ring out of his pocket and put it on. Suddenly, the lion vanished from sight. One day, Willy came to an ocean. Now Willy was very thirsty, so he bent down to take a drink. But suddenly, another mermaid who was Tina’s servant appeared out of the splashing waves. This mermaid was only a bit less strong than Tina. She pulled on Willy’s hand very tightly, and at last, Willy was in the kingdom under the water.
There, the servant mermaid took Willy to the king and queen. Now the king and queen of the kingdom had died, so Cory and Tina were now king and queen. When Cory saw Willy, he immediately recognized him as his brother. But Tina knew nothing about it. She thought that Willy was only a human from land that wanted to drink from her pond. Cory tried to tell Tina that Willy was his brother, but Tina was too angry to listen. Tina had Willy look after the royal ducks. So Willy spent almost three years as a slave. Cory tried to tell Tina that Willy was his brother, but Tina would never listen. One day, Willy was taking the ducks to the very little grass that grew under the water. As the ducks were eating, Willy felt thirsty.
Willy went to the drinking place, took a drink, and returned to the ducks. But when Willy came to the ducks, he saw that one of the ducks had been stolen. Willy began to weep, for he knew that Tina would be very angry if she got to know that even one of her ducks had been stolen. Willy knew that Tina would blame it all on him, and she would have him killed. Willy went sadly to Tina and Cory. When Tina heard that one of her ducks had been stolen, she was furious.
She ordered that the very next day, Willy’s head should be cut off. Cory was very sad. He did not want his brother to be killed, but even he could not stop Tina. Tina was afraid that Willy would escape that night, so she ordered that Willy would be put in prison that whole night. So Tina’s guards put Willy in prison. That night, when everyone was asleep, Willy quietly took out the magic ring and put it on. Suddenly, ten tiny men dressed in gold, silver, and copper appeared. They got to work immediately. They cut and cut and cut. At last, just before dawn, the tiny men disappeared, leaving a big hole in the cells.
Willy quietly got out from the hole, and escaped. When morning came, Tina ordered that Willy’s should be cut off. But when the guards looked for Willy in prison, all they could see was a big hole in the cells. After Tina found out that Willy had escaped, she sent for a big search party to look for him. After two whole months, the search party found Willy. Tina fell at the feet of Willy. After Willy forgave Tina, he was appointed as the prime minister. So Tina, Cory, and Willy lived happily ever.
