THE PRINCESS WHO LOVED MUSIC
Based on a library book story called "The Very Brave Warrior". Latter part of this story created by Shivali.
Once upon a time, there lived a king who had a beautiful queen. One day, the queen had a baby girl. The king and queen named her, Maria. Maria grew up to be a kind, gentle lady. She loved instruments, and music was her life. But most of all, Maria loved to play the piano. Every note she played on the piano was like pure gold. Her music was soft and gentle, and her notes were sweet and pure. The king and queen loved Maria very much.
One day, when Maria was about the age of 17, she was walking in the royal gardens when suddenly there appeared from the sky a great flash of thunder. When the great storm ended, there appeared on the ground a little sparrow. On the sparrow there was a man who looked like a prince. He wore rich clothing which sparkled in the sun light, and shoes made out of the finest leather. The young man was playing the piano and his notes were also like pure gold. The young man kindly looked at Maria and said, “My name is Jacob, and my father is a courtier of the great emperor.” My mother works for a high ranked officer and gets paid very well.” “That is why I am dressed in such rich clothes.” “I have heard of your love for music and I wanted to come entertain you by playing the piano.”
Maria was shocked at Jacob’s gentle words. “How I wish I could marry you,” said Maria. Jacob and Maria spent some time together. When it was nearly midday, Jacob put his piano away, said fare well to Maria, and flew away on his little sparrow. After Jacob’s visit, Maria kept thinking about him. She could not concentrate on her royal duties, and she felt sad and gloomy every time she looked up at the sky. She did not eat properly, and by the next month she became very thin. Maria wished to see Jacob once again.
Over time, the king began to notice that Maria was quite sad and gloomy. He decided that it was time for Maria to marry. All the young men of the entire kingdom who were still unmarried were invited to a party. Princess Maria was to pick one man that she wished to marry. She would give that lucky man a golden apple prepared by the king himself. When the day of the party arrived, Maria was dressed in fine clothes. She wore a gown made out of silk, and her jewelry was made out of pure gold and silver. Her slippers were made out of real glass which sparkled in the sun light. And in her hand a small piano was placed. When Maria was ready, she was brought outside.
Everyone was amazed at her beauty. Each man hoped that Maria would pick him. But Maria did not look at any man. She looked and looked for Jacob, but he was nowhere to be seen. Poor Maria was forced to pick an evil man who was not only evil, but ugly too. On the day that Maria was to wed the evil man, she went to the royal stables to pet her beloved horse one last time. As she sat weeping beside her horse which was called, Shiny, she was surprised to find out that she could speak.
Shiny said, “Do not weep Maria.” “At the time the wedding will start, ask the king if you may take a walk in the royal gardens one last time.” “As you walk, a great storm will come.” “When the storm ends, a little sparrow will appear on the ground.” “Jacob will be on it.” “Fly away with him and never come back.” Shiny gave Maria a little box full of ashes. “If you ever need me, just take one of these ashes and drown it in the sacred river,” said Shiny. Maria took the box and did just as Shiny had told her.
Maria flew away with Jacob. She was surprised to find out that Jacob lived in a little palace. It was smaller than a king’s palace, but it was certainly bigger than an ordinary man’s house. Maria and Jacob lived happily with Jacob’s parents. The emperor helped all the time, for Jacob’s father worked for him. One year soon passed by and Maria had a baby boy. They named him, Joe.
Joe was taught good manners from his kind parents and grandparents. When Joe was about the age of 16, Jacob taught him how to hunt in the forest and keep the garden clean. Maria taught him how to water the plants and take care of the horses. When Jacob was 17 years old, Maria had a baby girl who was called, Mara. Joe learned to take care of his sister Mara. One day, when Joe was 18 and Mara was 2, Maria went to the well to fetch some water.
As she dipped her bucket into the well, a dark shadow appeared from the bottom of the well. Maria recognized him as the evil man who wanted to marry her when she was 16. The evil man lifted her up and took her to his dark cave in the high mountains.
Meanwhile, Jacob, Joe, and Mara waited and waited for Maria to come back. When she did not come, Jacob went to consult a wise man. The wise man said, “The evil man that wanted to marry Maria when she was young has come back.” “You must save Maria.” “The evil man lives in a dark cave in the high mountains.” “Go to the high mountains and save Maria.” So Jacob left Joe and Mara with his parents, and set off. Finally, Jacob rescued Maria. And they all lived happily ever after.
