The Parrot Princess
Once upon a time, there lived a King and a Queen who had a baby boy called Henry. To celebrate Henry’s birth, the King and Queen held a party. Five wise pixies were called to attend the party. The pixies would tell the King and Queen what the future of their son would be. At party, it was finally time for the pixies to announce what the future of the little prince would be. The pixies said, “Oh great King and Queen, this speech of ours will tell you what your son’s future will be.” “We are sorry to say this, but when your son grows up, he will be killed by a woman named Jiria.”
“The only way to escape this awful death is if you allow Henry to marry the Parrot Princess.” “If Henry does not find and marry the Parrot Princess by the time he is 25 years old, then evil Jiria will kill him.” Saying these words, the wise pixies left the palace. And how sad were the parents of Henry! They didn’t want their son to die, but where and how would they find such a Parrot Princess? The King and Queen were greatly depressed.
They could not rule their kingdom well because of their sorrow. The whole kingdom was unhappy. So Henry grew up in a very sad place. Henry loved his parents and the comforts of his kingdom, but he often wondered why the people of the kingdom including his parents were so sad. And the King and Queen never told Henry about why everyone was so sad. They kept it a secret. But soon Henry was a young youth. And he was close to his 25th birthday.
The King and Queen were very scared. The days soon flew past, and it was only one month away to Henry’s 25th birthday. Finally, the King and Queen decided to tell Henry the truth. But to their surprise, Henry was not shocked at all when he heard this news. He simply said, “Well, if that is my future, let it be so.” “I will leave the palace this very day, and I will go out into the world and try to find the Parrot Princess.” “I will return by the time my 25th birthday takes place.” “If I return with the Parrot Princess, then I shall marry her and we shall live happily for many years.” “If, however, I fail to find the Parrot Princess before my 25th birthday, then I will gladly agree to be killed by Jiria.” Saying so, Henry bade farewell to his parents and left the palace to find the Parrot Princess.
Henry traveled far and wide until he was out of his kingdom and in a large forest. Here, Henry decided to spend the night. He lay down beside a fallen tree and was just closing his tired eyes when he spotted a little sparrow. The sparrow was crying for help, for it was stuck in the nets of a hunter. Henry, who loved gentle animals, hurried over to save the sparrow. Once the sparrow was free, it thanked Henry a thousand times and said, “Great man, whoever you are and whatever your name is, may you be blessed with a thousand kind souls!” “May I know what you are looking for?” Henry smiled and said, “I’m Henry, and I am the son of a great King and Queen.” “Some wise pixies had told my parents that a woman named Jiria would kill me on my 25th birthday.”
“The only way to escape death is if I find the Parrot Princess and marry her before my 25th birthday takes place.” “I am on a quest to find her.” At this, the little sparrow said, “Oh, I know Jiria!” “Dying in her hands is horrible!” “But maybe I can help you find the Parrot Princess.”
“Travel on until you come to a big path.” “Walk on that path.” “The path will soon divide into three large sidewalks.” “The first sidewalk will say, ‘If you go on this sidewalk, you will die.’” “What that sidewalk means is if you go on that sidewalk, you will never find the Parrot Princess and this is why you shall die.” “The second sidewalk will say, ‘If you take this sidewalk, you will live, but you will also die.’” “What it means is that if you go on this sidewalk, you shall find the Parrot Princess and marry her and shall thus live, but you will not like your new wife and thus shall die.”
“The third sidewalk will say, ‘If you go on this sidewalk, you shall live but shall not live as well.’” “What that sidewalk means is that if you go on that sidewalk, you shall find the Parrot Princess and shall thus live, but your horse shall die and shall thus not live.” “The sidewalk you should take is the sidewalk that says, ‘If you go on this sidewalk, you shall live but not live as well.’” When you are halfway down that sidewalk, your horse will die.”
“You will have to walk on until you come to a great kingdom.” “Go to the palace of their king.” “Now I must warn you, the king is actually an ogre who harms the people of his kingdom a lot.” “Nothing more am I allowed to tell you, but I can say that in that palace you will find what you seek.” Saying this, the sparrow flew away. Henry thanked the sparrow in his heart. Then he traveled on as the sparrow had told him. Finally, he came to a big pathway. He continued to travel on that pathway. Finally Henry saw that the path was dividing into three sidewalks.
He took the very sidewalk that the sparrow had told him to. On went Henry and his horse. After much traveling, Henry’s horse grew tired. When he did not receive food from his master, the horse fell to its heels and died. Henry sadly buried his horse and walked on his bare feet along the paths. At last, Henry reached a large kingdom. Henry hurried to the palace of the Ogre King. At the palace, Henry asked a servant to tell the Ogre King that there was a new man ready to serve him. The Ogre King, who was in great need of a groom for his horses, gladly accepted Henry as a servant.
He ordered him to groom his horses. Over time, Henry began to notice that the Ogre King had a serving maid named Sarah. Sarah was best in all ways. She had fair, white skin. She had golden hair which flowed along her delicate shoulders like silk. Her eyes were soft and gentle. She was very kind to all. She was obviously very beautiful. Henry liked Sarah very much. But one day, as Henry was walking in the royal hall, he saw that Sarah was weeping. But when Henry asked why, Sarah only looked away. Then one day, Henry found that Sarah was very upset.
He asked Sarah why she was always so sad. At first Sarah kept silent, but finally she told Henry why she was upset. She said, “I am the only daughter of a miller and his wife.” “When I was just 2 years old, I was sitting by the mill, playing games with the animals.” “My parents were away on some work.” “Then suddenly a golden ball rolled towards me, and since I was only a little child, I thought it would be fun to chase after it.” “I followed that golden ball until the ball stopped by a tall cliff.”
“I stopped as well.” “I put the ball in my pocket and turned to run home, but I found that I was at the top of a large cliff!” “I was very scared.” “Then I saw the Ogre King coming towards me.” “I tried to run away, but the Ogre King captured me and brought me to his palace.” “I grew up in his kingdom.” “When I was only 10 years old, the Ogre King started giving me work to do.” “By the time I was a young girl, I was working as a serving maid for the Ogre King.” “I was captured by the Ogre King when I was only 2 years old.” “Now look at me, a young maiden.” “Ever since I was captured I wished to see my parents once again, but the Ogre King has had no pity on me.”
“That’s why I’m sad.” Saying this, Sarah burst into tears. Henry felt sorry for her. He said, “I understand how you must be feeling.” “Let me tell you my story.” “I am the only son of a great King and Queen.” “My parents had held a party to honor my birth.” “They were told by some wise pixies that when I would turn 25, an evil woman named Jiria would kill me.” “The only way to escape death is if I find and marry the Parrot Princess by the time I’m 25 years old.” “I am looking for the Parrot Princess.”
Hearing this, Sarah immediately turned in a golden parrot. Her body was all golden, except for her head. Her head was covered with rainbow colored feathers. Such a beautiful bird was very rare. Henry was shocked. Soon, Sarah turned back into a maiden. Henry asked her what that was all about. Sarah smiled and said, “If it is the Parrot Princess which you seek, then luck has befallen you.” “For I myself am the Parrot Princess.” “I was born from the power of the Parrot Queen.” “So I am sometimes called the Parrot Princess.” “I will be glad to marry you.”
Henry’s joy sure was great. That very day, Sarah married Henry secretly. The Ogre King knew nothing of their marriage. Because Henry had married the Parrot Princess, Jiria disappeared from the world and thus Henry’s life was saved. But now, Henry had a new problem. How was he to escape with his wife? They thought and thought. While they were thinking, Sarah said, “Go tomorrow and ask the Ogre King for the Fire Tax.” “The Ogre King may not give you the Fire Tax, so take this knife.” “When the ogre refuses, just show him this knife and he will give you the Fire Tax.” Henry took the knife and bade farewell to Sarah. Then next day, Henry asked the Ogre King for the Fire Tax. At first the ogre refused, but seeing the Fire Tax he agreed. Taking the Fire Tax, Henry went back to Sarah. Sarah took the Fire Tax and said, “Tax of mine, please do something divine.” “We need your help; we really do, for we are in great woe!” “Help us escape, oh Fire Tax, or else there’s something which you lack.”
The Fire Tax suddenly made two wax dolls which looked exactly like Henry and Sarah. Then the Fire Tax said, “Go on, go, no need to be afraid, for it is copies of you two which I have made.” Then Sarah and Henry hurried out of the open window. Meanwhile, the Ogre King needed some help grooming his horses. He called out loudly, “Henry!” “Come help me groom my horses!” At that, the wax doll which looked like Henry came to life. It hurried over and helped the ogre. Next the Ogre King wanted Sarah to bring him tea. He called out, “Sarah!”
“Bring me some tea!” At this, the wax doll which looked like Sarah came to life and brought the ogre some tea. Things went good for some time, until the Ogre King took the Fire Tax and put it in his closet. Then, the two wax dolls disappeared. The Ogre King called Henry, but no one responded. Then the Ogre King realized that he had been deceived by Henry and Sarah. He quickly put on his magic boots which helped him run faster than anyone on the earth. He then ran quickly after Henry and Sarah. But by this time, those two were safely at the miller’s house.
The Ogre King fell into a large lake and met his death. The miller and his wife were very happy to see Sarah again. Sarah introduced Henry to her parents. Both were married once more. Then the miller, his wife, Henry, and Sarah all went to the palace of Henry’s father. The King and Queen were very happy to see Henry alive. His 25th birthday was celebrated. And all of them lived happily ever after. THE END
