Cynthia And Her Goose
Once upon a time, there lived a farmer and his wife. They were very poor, and the money they earned was hardly enough to feed the family. They had three daughters, and they were named, Visica, Susie, and Cynthia. Every day, the farmer would get up early. His wife would cook his breakfast and her own breakfast. Then the wife would cook their three daughters’ breakfast. The farmer would go out into his field and work. At midday, he would pick the vegetables and put them in a large basket. Half his wife would mix into water and milk to make vegetable soup for their lunch. The other half they would load inside the basket and give it to their youngest daughter, Cynthia. Cynthia would sell the vegetables at the market. With the money, Cynthia would buy some bread and cheese for supper. This went on for many years. Although the farmer and his wife were very poor, they loved their daughters. But most of all, they loved Cynthia.
Cynthia was really the only daughter who worked. Visica and Susie just lazed around all day doing nothing. They complained that they were bored, but yet they didn’t wish to help their youngest sister with the chores. Poor Cynthia worked hard from the moment the sun rose to the moment it set. Despite all of her hard work, her older sisters kept teasing her. They teased her because they thought she was working too hard. They often said, “Look how our youngest sister is working!” “She works so hard!” “She’s only worrying herself!” “Why, what girl would want to work so hard?!” “Look, our sister is so stupid!” “Why doesn’t she leave all her work and join us?” “After all, Mother and Father will always be there for the work!”
When Cynthia heard these words, she always shook her head and replied, “Our poor parents are too old now to do all the work.” “I’m only trying to help them.” “After all, what daughter would enjoy herself while her parents are working all day?” “Instead of teasing me, why not help me in the work?” Visica and Susie never agreed. They just laughed. One day, the farmer and his wife decided that it was time for the eldest daughter Visica to marry. They consulted Visica. Now Visica, who was a fashionable girl, refused because she had been acting in a fashion show for so long. She had no wish to marry until the fashion show was over. The farmer and his wife explained to Visica that the fashion show was not so important. Having a family is important. But Visica only said, “Think of all the money I’ll earn when the show is over!” “All that money will feed the whole family for weeks!” “Don’t you want that, Father and Mother?” The farming couple tried to explain, but Visica wouldn’t agree.
So next they went to Susie and asked her if she wanted to marry. But Susie refused, for she had been opening a business. Susie had no wish to marry until her business succeeded. Last, the poor couple went to their youngest and most beloved daughter, Cynthia. Now Cynthia was too busy in her chores to work. She gladly agreed to be married. The couple began looking for a suitable husband.
One day, the couple heard that the king wanted his son to be married. It was high time the prince got married. The prince was named, Fincher. The king held a ball. Each and every maiden of the kingdom who was unmarried should come to the palace for the ball. Well, you can guess what happened. There was excitement in the farmer’s house. The farming couple urged all their daughters to go, but Visica and Susie didn’t wish to go. So Cynthia decided to go alone to the ball. But she didn’t have a gown to wear. Cynthia, the farmer, and the wife worked really hard. Finally, they had enough money to buy Cynthia a dress.
Cynthia went to the market to look for a suitable gown. At the shops, she saw a butcher with chunks of meat hanging around his shop. The butcher had a big crowd around his shop. Cynthia went closer to see what was happening. She saw the whole thing. It was like this. The butcher lived with his wife just beside his shop. One day, a little goose had flew inside his house and had eaten all the seeds that the butcher’s wife was going to use to make bread. The butcher caught the goose. He was really angry.
The butcher was going to kill the poor goose. Cynthia took pity on the poor goose. She bravely went up to the butcher and said, “If you will sell me that goose you are about to kill, I will give you all my money.” The butcher sighed and asked, “Well, how much do you have?” Cynthia held out all the money. The butcher counted. She had exactly three hundred gold coins. The butcher took the money, gave Cynthia the goose, and hurried back to his house with excitement.
Cynthia took the little goose back to her house. The farming couple asked why Cynthia had no gown. Cynthia explained everything. The couple smiled and said, “Saving a living soul is much better than buying a dress.” “You are extremely kind, daughter Cynthia.” But Visica and Susie, who never wanted Cynthia to go to the ball, were happy. They laughed and said, “See how stupid our sister is!” “She used up all her money just for the sake of a dirty goose!” But Cynthia didn’t listen. She took the goose to her small bedroom and gave it seeds to munch on. Soon Cynthia was friends with the bird. But one thing saddened her. The ball was that very night, and now that she had no more money she couldn’t buy a beautiful gown to wear. And without a gown, Cynthia would never be able to attend the ball and see Prince Fincher.
The goose saw her weeping and asked what the matter was. Cynthia told it everything. The goose then said some magic words which Cynthia did not understand. Within the blink of an eye, there appeared on the table a beautiful gown, golden slippers, and a bouquet of flowers all ready for her. The goose said, “Quickly, put these on and hold the bouquet in your right hand.” “Just remember, don’t take your hands off the bouquet until you are home again.” “Otherwise, bad luck will fall upon you.” “Also, be careful not to take your golden slippers off of your feet until you are home again.” Cynthia nodded.
The things were so beautiful. The gown’s edge had beautiful jewels of every color. It was silver all over. At the other edge, it was decorated with gold and jewels together. The slippers were golden all over except for the very edge. At the edge they were decorated with jewels of every color and golden thread. There was a picture of Prince Fincher and Cynthia on each of the slippers. The bouquet had 10 flowers exact, 2 purple, 2 green, 2 blue, 2 pink, and 2 red. Cynthia put the gown on, put the slippers on her feet, and took the bouquet.
Outside the house, there was a beautiful carriage waiting for her. It was golden all over. Inside there was a coachman dressed in silver, and a footman dressed in copper. Cynthia hopped in and the coachman drove her to the palace. At the ball, many young women were present, but none were as beautiful as Cynthia. Cynthia entered and looked out to find Prince Fincher. The prince looked at Cynthia. He immediately fell in love with her.
They danced together for a long time. Cynthia was careful not to take her hands off the bouquet or to take her slippers off her feet. However, one ugly maiden grew jealous of Cynthia. So when Cynthia was having dinner with the prince, she stole in and grabbed Cynthia’s bouquet. Then she quickly took one slipper off of her feet. These the ugly maiden took. She put the slipper on.
She held the bouquet in her hands. Meanwhile, when Prince Fincher wasn’t looking, Cynthia turned into the ugly maiden. The ugly maiden turned into Cynthia. Quickly, the maiden pushed Cynthia out of her seat and took her place. The real Cynthia took the maiden’s place. For the rest of the time, Prince Fincher danced with the real ugly maiden, but he thought that it was Cynthia. When the time came for the ball to end, the real Cynthia turned into a cow and ran away. The real ugly maiden left, too. The prince didn’t know that he had been dancing half the time with the ugly maiden named Kaka.
He simply went to the king and said, “I am in love with the very woman whom I danced with all the time.” So the king sent messengers to look for that very maiden. It was not long before they came to the house of Kaka. Kaka now looked exactly like Cynthia. Kaka’s father had died, and her mother was not at home. Kaka was admiring her new beauty in her glass mirror when she saw the messengers arriving. She hurried out and greeted them, asking, “From where do you come, oh great men?”
The messengers greeted Kaka and asked, “We are the king’s messengers.” “We come looking for the very maiden Prince Fincher danced with all the time at the ball.” “Our great prince wishes to marry that maiden.” “And, young lady, you look a lot like the maiden we are looking for.” Kaka, who now looked exactly like Cynthia, said quickly, “Your search is now over, great messengers of the king; for I’m called Kaka and I am the very maiden you are searching for.” “Take me to the prince.” “I’m now ready to marry him.”
The messengers were overjoyed. They took Kaka to the palace in a nicely decorated carriage. Prince Fincher ran out to meet Kaka. Since Kaka looked exactly like Cynthia, he thought that she was the very maiden he wished to marry. Preparations were made for the marriage. Now, let us find out what happened to the real Cynthia who was now a cow. Well, the poor cow wandered here and there, through rain and stormy weather. Finally the cow came upon a zoo. Before the blink of an eye, the cow was caught in a net and was brought to town by some hunters.
The hunters sold the poor cow to a zoo-keeper. The zoo-keeper took the cow to a zoo where he placed her inside a large cage and shut her up. The little cow was given food and drink every day, and every day visitors came to look at her and take pictures of her. The poor cow was stared at by all the people. She remembered how she was once a person herself.
She wondered how much her family missed her. Meanwhile, Cynthia’s parents, the farmer and his wife, looked and looked for Cynthia. Their other daughters, Visica and Susie, just played around. They didn’t miss their young sister at all. The goose, whom Cynthia had rescued, knew that surely Cynthia must have taken her hands off the bouquet or had taken a slipper off her feet. Surely, something bad must have happened if that happened. The goose missed Cynthia a lot. The elder sisters, Visica and Susie, hated the bird from the very beginning, but they couldn’t harm it because of Cynthia. Now that Cynthia was gone, they could do anything they liked with the goose. One day, they threw the poor goose out of the window.
The goose fell in a dark passage which people often destroyed. Inside the passage, the poor goose wandered here and there, looking for a kind person. At that moment, the goose saw that just outside the dark passage there was a great crowd. Looking down to see what was the matter, the goose saw that Kaka, who looked so much like Cynthia, was going with her parents to marry Prince Fincher. The goose had to stop their marriage.
Then the bird had a plan. It quietly grabbed some old vines stuck in the passage and began to pull itself free. Finally, with the help of the strong grape vines, the goose was able to climb out of the dark passage. The bird waddled to the middle of the crowd and bit a lady’s leg. The lady cried out in pain, and the rest of the people ran to catch the goose that bit her. And while they chased him, the goose flew over to Kaka and grabbed the golden slipper and the beautiful bouquet. As soon as these things were in his beak, the goose flew away. Kaka immediately changed back into her ugly shape. Everyone now saw that who they thought was Cynthia was actually Kaka. They beat Kaka until she died. It was soon reported to the king that the bride of Prince Fincher was actually an ugly one named Kaka.
Now Kaka was dead. Prince Fincher found out, and he was heartbroken. He was so sad, he fell ill. All of the doctors of the land tried to cure him, but all failed. Meanwhile, the little goose flew everywhere until he came upon the very zoo Cynthia was kept in. Now the goose was a magic goose, and so he recognized Cynthia at once, even though she was in the form of a cow. When the guides were not looking, the goose flew into Cynthia’s cage and put the slipper on one of her hooves. Then he made Cynthia touch the bouquet.
Immediately, Cynthia turned back into her own human shape. When the zoo-keeper came in to feed the cow, he was surprised to find a beautiful young maiden in the cage of his cow. Cynthia told him the whole story. The zoo-keeper let Cynthia go away with her goose. They both went to the palace where the king was sitting next to his son. As soon as Prince Fincher saw Cynthia, he felt much better. The next day Prince Fincher and Cynthia were married. THE END
