Curt And Fredy
Once upon a time, there lived two brothers named Curt and Fredy. The elder, Curt, was very rich. The younger, Fredy was very poor. Curt was grateful for all that he had, and he was very kind and handsome. His brother Fredy was not at all grateful. He often went to the house of his elder brother and said, “You’re just so rich.” “Why am I not rich?” “Don’t I deserve riches too?” “Give me my share, brother!” “It isn’t nice of you to keep all the money yourself!” Curt, being kind, always gave his younger brother money, but Fredy always came back empty-handed. Then Curt would give him more, but once again Fredy would come back empty-handed.
Curt tried to explain to Fredy that he couldn’t just keep giving him money. Fredy would have to earn it. But Fredy, who was much too lazy to work, never listened. One day, Curt married a woman named Lillia. Lillia had a sister named Lolla. Curt got Lolla married to Fredy. Now as the days went by, Lolla saw that her husband Fredy kept going to his brother’s house to ask for money. Lolla, who was a hard-working woman, spoke to Fredy one day. She said, “Dear husband, I know that my sister Lillia’s new husband Curt is very kind and will always give you money, but it isn’t nice to ask rudely for money at someone’s door.” “Perhaps we should both find work.” “After all, you do get bored lazing around all day.”
Hearing this, Fredy said, “Lovely wife, why work when there is someone right next door who shall fulfill our needs?” “Curt is very kind, generous, and loving.” “He will always give us money.” “Why work?” Lolla tried to explain, but Fredy never listened. One day, Curt and Lillia had a child. It was a baby girl. They named her Prilia. Now that they had a child, Curt and Lillia were very happy. Shortly after that they had a baby boy, and they named him Gresot. Now the family was even happier. Now when Fredy heard of his brother’s new babies, he was jealous.
So he went to Curt’s house where they were having a party for the birth of their children. Fredy said to Curt, “Brother, you are kind and generous and always give me money.” “Now, since I don’t have any children and you have two, why don’t you give me and my wife your son Gresot?” “You may keep the girl Prilia.” Curt was alarmed. He angrily said, “For so many years I have given you money.” “Now I regret it.” “Money I was able to give you because you were my younger brother, but children are different.” “These are my children, and handing them over to you is impossible.”
Fredy was so angry; he stomped out of the hall without answering. As he walked out the door, Fredy said, “You are the meanest brother anyone could ever have!” Curt’s feelings were hurt when he saw his young brother walk out the door with these mean words. At the party, Curt was never happy. Lillia asked him why. She said, “Dear Curt, why not celebrate the birth of our children with our guests instead of glooming around?” “Why are you so sad on a such a special occasion?” Curt kept his mouth shut. However, in the next few days, Curt was so sad, his wife Lillia asked him a billion times why he was so gloomy.
Finally, Curt said, “Wife, you must know that my younger brother Fredy keeps asking me for money and I give it to him always.” Lillia said, “Yes, of course I know Fredy.” “He’s the husband of my sister Lolla.” “What’s wrong with Fredy?” Curt said, “Well, at the party Fredy talked to me in private.” “He asked me if he could have our son Gresot.”
“He said that since we have two children, perhaps he could take Gresot while we kept Prilia.” “Now tell me wife, isn’t he being greedy?” Lillia agreed. She was equally angry. In fact, she was so angry, she stopped talking to her sister Lolla. One day Lolla asked, “What’s the matter, sister Lillia?” “Why don’t you talk with me?” “Are you angry?” Lillia said, “Of course I’m angry at you, mean woman!” “How can I believe that you’re my own sister?” “Your husband Fredy came to our party and asked for our son, Gresot.” “Do you think we would give him Gresot or Prilia?” “We love our children equally.”
Lolla began to cry at hearing these mean words from her sister. She ran home and stormed into Fredy’s room. “How mean you are!” she exclaimed. “Do you think that it is right to go and ask for someone’s child and then say mean words when he refuses?” “Now all because of you, my sister is angry at me!” Saying so, she hurried out. Soon Curt and Lillia got over everything, and they lived happily with their two children, Gresot and Prilia. Both were equally loved. But Lolla and Fredy still had problems between each other. Lolla hated Fredy, and she regretted having married him. And Fredy was not very happy with his wife, either. Both scolded each other for no reasons, and both were angry. Finally one day, Lolla dragged her husband out to town and began to look for a job.
One day, Fredy came upon a great king. The king was very angry. His daughter, the princess, had been roaming around all day with an old thief. Princess Yita, for that was the princess’s name, had disappointed her father by going to roam with nothing but an old thief. The king was determined to catch the thief so that Princess Yita would not be lured to him. But the king was not yet able to catch thief. He needed someone to help him. Whoever succeeded in catching the thief would receive a great reward. Lolla said to Fredy, “Hey, why not try to catch that rascal?” “Perhaps, the king will be so happy, he will give us enough money for the rest of our lives!” “Don’t you want that?” Fredy said, “How am I to succeed in a task which the king himself cannot accomplish?”
Lolla thought for a while. Then she said, “Well, I know an old, wise woman who knows everything.” “Perhaps she will be able to tell you where to find the thief.” “Princess Yita and the king need you, husband!” “Go!” So bidding farewell to his wife, Fredy went to the king and said, “I think I will be able to catch your thief.” The king agreed to let him try. Fredy went over to the house of the wise woman and asked her where to find the thief. The woman said, “Late at night, hide behind the corner of Princess Yita’s room.” “Every day at midnight, the thief comes to kiss Princess Yita and talk with her.” “When the thief hops in, hurry down with a knife and cut his arms off.” “He will disappear when you do this.”
So Fredy hurried back to the palace. At night, he hid behind the corner of Princess Yita’s room. When Yita was fast asleep, strange noises began to come out of the open window. Fredy got his knife ready. Then, the window crashed open. A black man with only one eye and three limbs walked in. As soon as he was in, Fredy charged. Just as the thief bent to kiss Yita, Fredy rushed in with his knife. He crashed on top of the thief, but before he could cut off his arms, the thief rushed out the window with Fredy running after him. Meanwhile Princess Yita woke up at once hearing the loud crashes, only to find no one there.
She quickly called her father the king, who woke up with a start. The whole palace woke up and waited to see what would happen next. Fredy chased after the thief. Soon the thief bumped into some old rocks. He stopped. All at once, Fredy raised his knife and cut off the thief’s arms. The thief disappeared all at once. Fredy drank some water from a stream and hurried back to the palace. There, the king, Princess Yita, and all the others were standing, looking very surprised. Fredy told them all that had happened. Princess Yita smiled and said, “I’m sorry for roaming with a thief, Father.” “And Mr. Fredy, what you did was amazing!” “Thanks for saving me from loving that rascal!” “Won’t you give Mr. Fredy a reward?”
The king, eager to reward his winner, rushed to his treasure room and brought back all the diamonds, gold coins, lumps of silver, and jewels that he could carry. These he handed to Fredy saying, “You have saved my daughter from roaming with that old rascal!” “This is your reward.” Fredy gladly took all the treasures and hurried back to Lolla, who was certainly amazed to see all the treasures. With their new wealth, they moved back to their old house where Curt and his family were. Lillia regretted having scolded her sister. And Curt didn’t think arguing with Fredy helped, either. They welcomed Fredy and Lolla. Gresot and Prilia now had two pairs of parents, now. For Lillia and Curt shared their children with Lolla and Fredy. And Fredy, who was now rich, never asked anyone else for money. THE END
