God Disguised As Man
Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, there lived a poor woman who had two daughters. The first was named, Cherry. She was named Cherry because her lips were cherry red. The second was named, Blossom, because her cheeks were as sweet as a blossom. The poor woman and her daughters lived in a little town. Often, the woman would send her daughters to the forest to pick some berries, roots, and nuts for supper. Now Cherry did not like the forest, for she knew that it was filled with wild animals. Cherry did not like to stay in the forest late at night, so she picked the berries fast and told her sister Blossom to hurry up. But Blossom loved the forest and its wild creatures. She liked to stay in the forest late at night and watch the stars.
One day, after Cherry was finished picking berries, she saw that it was already dark. Cherry called out to Blossom and told her to hurry up. But Blossom was too busy watching the nighttime sky. So after a while, Cherry left without her sister, thinking that Blossom would soon catch up. But Blossom did not catch up. She watched the stars until it was midnight. Then, Blossom became tired and sleepy. She looked for her sister Cherry. But no matter how loud Blossom called, she could not find Cherry. Even Blossom was afraid of the darkness. Sadly, Blossom walked along the path. When it was nearly dawn, Blossom came to a well filled with water.
Blossom was very thirsty, so she picked up a little bucket, and began to draw some water. Suddenly, there appeared on the ground a handsome young man who was badly injured. Blood was coming out of his wounds. Blossom gently poured some water over the man’s wounds, dried the blood, put bandages on them, and let him rest on her lap. For the whole day Blossom let the handsome young man rest on her lap. At sun set, the man’s wounds stopped hurting.
He thanked Blossom and said, “You have saved my life.” “I shall be grateful to you all my life.” The young man gave Blossom a gold ring, a golden box, and a small picture of him. “When your life is in danger, just wear this golden ring and I will come to your aid.” “If you need anything, just open this golden box.” “And whenever you feel lonely, look at my picture to remember me.” With these words, the young man disappeared. Before leaving, the young man also told Blossom the way to get home. Blossom happily went home. Once again, Blossom lived like she had before. The years passed quickly. One day, the mother of Cherry and Blossom died.
Cherry packed some things and went to seek her fortune. Now Blossom was left alone. So, taking the golden ring, the golden box, the picture of the young man, and a few of her belongings, Blossom moved to the countryside and built herself a little house to live in by the forest. Often, Blossom would stay deep in the forest late at night and watch the stars like she used to when she was very young. Whenever Blossom felt lonely, she looked at the picture. And whenever she needed anything, she only had to open the box and wish for it. One day, as Blossom was watching the stars late at night, she looked into a well, and gazing at her reflection, she thought, “How peaceful it is living in the country!” “I only wish I had a husband.” “Then we could live together peacefully.” The next morning, Blossom got up early.
She got dressed and set some water to boil on the fire. Then she went to look for some berries for breakfast. As she was picking berries, she heard a sweet melody. It was coming from the bushes. Blossom had never heard a melody so sweet. She peeked in the bushes. To her surprise the man who was playing the melody was the same man who had given her the golden ring, the golden box, and the small picture. But this time the man looked grander. He wore a long robe which was covered with jewels. He wore fine shoes and he carried a rod which was made out of silver and gold. He had a flute in his hand which he played.
The flute was very beautiful. The man was playing his flute on a large bird with colorful wings. When he played, all the birds came to join him. The young man put his flute down and said, “I am a god called, Lover.” “I am the god of love.” “When I met you in the forest and gave you the golden ring, the golden box, and the small picture.” “But at that time I was disguised as an ordinary young man.” “Now I love you, and I wish to marry you.” “But it is your choice weather you want to marry me or not.” Now Lover did look handsome, and since he was a god, Blossom agreed to marry him.
The next week, Lover and Blossom were married. For a few months, Lover lived with Blossom on the earth. But after three months, a large carriage pulled by a gentle dragon appeared. “Your Highness, we gods in the heavens need you.” “You must come back to heaven.” Lover said to Blossom, “Now I will have to go back up.” “But you can come with me if you want.” “I will go with you,” said Blossom. So Blossom and Lover went back to heaven. After a few months, Blossom got used to living in heaven. Blossom and Lover soon had a boy and a girl. Lover taught Blossom to play the flute as well as he did. Then Blossom taught the children. Lover and Blossom had named the boy Jake, and the girl Lily. Jake and Lily learned to play the flute as good as their parents Blossom and Lover. Blossom was also a great weaver. She wove the sun and the moon, she wove the stars, and she wove the clouds.
Now back in ancient Greece, people believed that heaven was just like the earth. It was full of people just like the earth. In heaven there lived a poor boy named Dylan who was all alone. His parents were dead. They had left him a little farm, some land, and an old buffalo. Now Dylan worked for a grumpy old man who barely paid him for all his hard work. By the end of the third month, Dylan had become so poor, that he did not even have enough money to pay his debts. Dylan begged Lover to give him some time to pay his debts. Lover was a kind king, so he gave Dylan four weeks to pay. Dylan sadly walked along the path as he wondered how he would ever pay his debts.
Suddenly, Dylan spotted an old hermit with a long beard chanting some strange words. Dylan came to him and said, “Oh holy one, can you help me?” The hermit did not say anything. Once again Dylan asked him. This time the hermit said, “Go to the Eastern Mountains and there you will find your fortune.” Then the hermit fell silent. Dylan thanked the hermit and started back home.
The next day Dylan got ready for the long journey to the Eastern Mountains. Once he had packed, Dylan started his journey. At last he made it to the Eastern Mountains. There he found a big chest filled with gold and silver. Overwhelmed with joy, Dylan came home and paid his debts. Lover and Blossom were so happy with Dylan, that they made him the royal doorkeeper. As for Jake and Lily, they made great princes and princesses. THE END
